COURSE DESCRIPTIONS & OBJECTIVES:

COURSE 1: The Missing Link: Assessment of the Pelvic Floor in the Orthopedic Setting
Brianna DeWitt, PT & Doug White, PT, DPT, RMSK

This course is designed by a pelvic health specialist to bridge the gap between general orthopedic care and pelvic health by providing a basic understanding of pelvic floor anatomy and physiology, screening questions to identify pelvic floor contribution to orthopedic conditions, and external palpation/examination skills to best treat your patients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Understand basic anatomy/physiology of the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Be able to recognize overlap between orthopedic and pelvic floor conditions.
  • Learn appropriate screening questions for assessing pelvic floor needs.
  • Learn simple external PFM assessment tools to integrate into your practice.
  • Demonstration on the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound assessment of the pelvic floor muscles with Doug White, DPT, RMSK.

COURSE 2:  3D Printing Hand Orthoses: A Physical Therapist’s Perspective on Crafting Custom Solutions & the Future of Healthcare
Brett Carey, PT, DPT 

This presentation will delve into the exciting world of 3D printing hand orthoses, sharing the unique experiences of a practicing physical therapist. We’ll explore the basic processes involved in creating personalized hand orthoses using 3D printing technology, from initial patient assessment and 3D scanning to design considerations and final fitting.

This talk will discuss the crucial role of digital applications within the broader healthcare landscape, highlighting the growing global need for accessible and innovative technologies to address diverse patient needs.

COURSE 3:  Running Concepts and Analysis for the Physical Therapist
Jacob Melnick, PT, DPT, DHSc 

This course will begin with a brief overview of common terminology related to the phases of the gait cycle. It will then introduce what an ideal form may look like for the arms and legs, along with additional common terminology. We will then review components of the running shoe and general advice to provide patients. The course moves forward with common running injuries, causes, and injury prevention tips. We go over a return to running plan and an evidence-based running progression program for a patient that is beyond the introductory phase of running. We will finish the course with an overview of barefoot running, foot strike patterns, and a running analysis as a group.

  • Outline safe training progressions and injury prevention strategies

COURSE 4:  Perspectives on the Management and Treatment of Chronic Pain
Herb Yee, PT 

Review and discuss information regarding chronic pain and pain mechanisms, evidence based treatment regimen and self care for treating therapists.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the session, participants should be able to:
Describe the elements of chronic pain and how it is different from other pain diagnoses

  • Description of resources available in the treatment of patient with chronic pain
  • Evidence base modalities in the treatment of patients with chronic pain
  • Self care for practitioners who care for patients with chronic pain
  • Participants will be able to recognize patients with chronic pain
  • Participants will be able to formulate an objective treatment plan for patient with chronic pain

 

 

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Douglas M. White, PT, DPT, RMSK
Board Certified Clinical Spe
cialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy, Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography

Dr. White has more than 3 decades experience as an orthopaedic physical therapist. He is Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography. He teaches musculoskeletal ultrasound nationally to physical therapists, physicians, and athletic trainers. Dr. White helped write the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Practice Guideline for the Performance of Selected Ultrasound-Guided Procedures.

Dr. White is the past-President of the Imaging Special Interest Group and past Co-Chair of the Hip Panel for the Clinical Practice Guideline Project both of the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. He is the past-Chair of the Imaging section of APTA’s Frontiers in Research, Science and Technology Council. He has been published numerous times in the areas of imaging, orthopaedics and practice management. Dr. White has a practice in Hawi and is on faculty of Hawaii Pacific University Doctor of Physical Therapy program.


Brianna DeWitt, PT 

Brianna graduated from Eastern Washington University with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2015 and currently practices in Honolulu, specializing in pelvic health and oncology rehabilitation. She has volunteered with APTA Hawaii and the APTA Academy of Pelvic Health and serves as an adjunct faculty at Hawaii Pacific University’s DPT program to support the physical therapy community in the islands. She has previously presented at APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting in 2024 on supporting the adolescent and young adult oncology population in rehab practice. Brianna also has a comprehensive Pilates certification through Pilates O Ka La and enjoys being able to blend prevention and wellness with her rehab practice.

 

Brett Carey, PT, DPT is the CEO of Kalo Multispeciality Group based in Kona, Hawaii. His clinic exclusively uses 3D-printed hand orthoses for all post-operative patients. Kalo has also performed clinical trials with Spentys Orthopedics, trialing Ankle-foot-orthoses within adult patient populations. Additionally, Brett is an Adjunct Professor at Hawaii Pacific University which became the first University to offer additive manufacturing education to Doctor of Physical Therapy students. He serves as a Key Opinion Leader in Orthopedics for Desktop Health and believes that additive manufacturing will help meet overarching healthcare system goals of decreasing cost while bettering patient outcomes.

 

Jacob Melnick, PT, DPT, DHSc 

Dr. Jacob Melnick lives in Honolulu, HI, and serves as Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor in the DPT program at Hawai’i Pacific University. Prior to HPU, Jacob practiced as a physical therapist at Tripler Army Medical Center and Keesler Air Force Base, and he has served the general population as well as active-duty members, their dependents, and retirees during this time. He continues to practice locally, with a specific focus on distance runners, triathletes, surfers, and other common orthopedic conditions. He also serves in a consultative and mentorship role at OrhoSport Hawaii.

Dr. Melnick has additional training as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a dry needling practitioner, and as a USA Track and Field Level 1 Coach. He also completed his Doctor of Health Science degree with an emphasis in leadership and organizational behavior, and is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy.

Dr. Melnick has served the physical therapy profession as a leader in the American Physical Therapy Association while serving as Treasurer and on both the education and legislative committees for APTA Hawaii, as well as the Public Relations Chairman for APTA Mississippi. He has presented at state, regional, and national conferences on topics such as running injury and prevention, dry needling, clinical education and student performance, DPT program admissions, and clinical practice guidelines.

Herb Yee, PT

Herb Yee has been home since 1978 in Hawaii practicing as a clinician and director in acute care, outpatient private practice, rural health settings and as a trainer with the University of Hawaii  Pacific Basin Rehabilitation Research and Training Center in Micronesia and Samoa. He has served in various positions in the Hawaii Chapter of the APTA, from president to chairing a number of committees, and currently as our federal affairs liaison (FAL). His primary interests are manual orthopedics and cultural delivery of care. He is currently a consultant to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Centers Malama Ho’ola Pain Management Program. 


MEMBER RATES:

All APTA members are eligible for discounted member rates, regardless of which state chapter you belong to. You must be a member in good standing as of the date of the conference to be eligible for all member rates. Registrants who have a membership expiration date prior to the conference must provide proof of membership before the conference begins or they will be subject to paying the nonmember rate. New APTA members who do not yet have a member number must submit a copy of their membership application form or emailed confirmation to receive the member rate.

REGISTRATION CANCELLATION:
To cancel, email the chapter office at info@aptahawaii.org or call (800) 554-5569. Cancellations received by January 5 will receive a full refund minus a $25 cancellation fee. Cancellations received between January 6 and January 10 will receive a 50% refund. There will be no refunds after January 10, 2025. Unless there is a waiting list for the course, substitutions will be accepted at no charge until January 6. All substitutions must be for the same member type and rate and are at the discretion of chapter staff. No substitutions will be accepted after January 7, 2025 or if the course has a waiting list.

COURSE CANCELLATION:
In the unlikely event that the chapter must cancel the course/conference, the chapter will provide a refund of registrations fees. APTA Hawaii will not be responsible for additional costs, such as travel, incurred by registrants.

CONTINUING COMPETENCY UNITS:
The 2025 APTA Hawaii Winter Conference is sponsored by APTA Hawaii, the Hawaii chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. Pursuant to HRS section 461J-10.13, physical therapist and physical therapist assistant continuing competence units must be obtained from a provider or agency approved by the Hawaii Board of Physical Therapy. APTA Hawaii is a board-approved provider of continuing competence units and certifies that this course is applicable to the physical therapy scope of practice in the state of Hawaii. PTs and PTAs from other states who wish to attend this course must contact their licensing board to determine if the course meets the continuing competence rules and guidelines for their state and/or licensing board.
