Attending CSM in Washington, DC from January 23-26 and representing HAPTA was inspiring. We opened with Dr. Jerome Adams, US Surgeon General, who called for us to engage in collective futures together with new partnerships. His public health perspective is timely as we look at health promotion and wellness as a means to prevent injuries and unnecessary opioid usage. He challenged us to fight stigma in healthcare, by educating with science and facts, and to celebrate our successes, as we are making a difference! To be excited about exercise in our lives, sharing by example, as he said exercise is the secret weapon to our nation’s health. Over 16,000 attendees enjoyed CSM in DC, bringing therapists from around the globe together.

APTA presented their bold initiatives for 2019, including a powerful new building, a PTA 50th Anniversary party series, a federated alignment of all states and sections, a value proposition, advocacy on Medicare PTA reimbursement, and quality acceleration through expanded use of the PT Outcomes Registry. To encourage participation in the registry from a wide range of practices, APTA is offering special pricing incentives for a limited time. Visit www.ptoutcomes.com to learn more and take advantage of these incentives.

Inclusivity and debt burden came up.  2019 will bring new ways to get involved, such as APTA ENGAGE, an online volunteer portal for chapter and national opportunities ranging from one minute to one year.

I was honored to attend, and I am sure Hawaii wants to keep this party going here at home. Inspired by videos of adaptive athletes, the #ChoosePT campaign, and a simple saying about that feeling you get from your membership in the APTA community, “I am APTA.” In Hawaii, we are diverse. We promote health. We advocate. We advance quality. We are valuable. We use data. We collaborate. We have heart. We are APTA.
